10 Years: The Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation

The Centre for Corporate Reputation is an independent research centre within Oxford University’s Saïd Business School. We aim to understand how the reputations of organisations are created, sustained, enhanced, destroyed and rehabilitated. In 2018 we produced a book capturing some of our first 10 years of work, including summaries of our research projects, publications and events.

Our research


Our work is rooted in the following core themes:

  • Reputation is relational: firms do not own their reputations – these are owned by others. Corporations and institutions can influence this, but they do not control it.
  • Multiple reputations: organisations do not have a single reputation; they have a reputation for something with someone, which can mean several different, even competing, reputations. There is no single measure of reputation.
  • Reputation intermediaries: reputations are influenced in different ways and to differing degrees by intermediaries, including the media, regulators, ratings agencies and professional advisers.
  • The importance of reputation lies in its signalling power: in the absence of full information, it can create enduring – and distorted – perceptions.

Our teaching

We teach a course on the school’s MBA, underpinned by academic research and including contributions from leading figures from the business world.

We also work with Executive Education at Oxford Saïd on a number of courses, and run the Corporate Affairs Academy programme.


Centre for Corporate Reputation

Our main event is the annual Reputation Symposium, held over three days in August-September, at which scholars from around the world and from a broad range of academic disciplines meet in Oxford to discuss their work.

The symposium also includes professional development workshops for young scholars, and our annual awards for Best Published Paper and Best Dissertation are announced and presented at the symposium's opening dinner. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we had to cancel the 2020 symposium, instead hosting two webinars entitled ‘Responsibility, recovery and reputations: geopolitics and global business'. For more information about these and past symposiums, see under 'Selected past events', below, or email reputation@sbs.ox.ac.uk.

R:ETRO seminar series - Reputation: Ethics, Trust, and Relationships at Oxford

Rita Mota, our Intesa Sanpaolo Research Fellow, and Alan Morrison, Professor of Law and Finance at Saïd Business School, organise a series of seminars exploring reputation, trust, ethics, and relationships. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, these R:ETRO seminars now take place online.

SOAR seminar series - Stigma, Organisations, Authenticity, and Reputation 

Rohini Jalan and Eva Schlindwein, our Postdoctoral Research Fellows, and Tom Lawrence, Professor of Strategic Management at Saïd Business School, host a series of online seminars providing a forum to discuss research on how organisations navigate stigma, status and authenticity in a variety of contexts, including social innovation and community-based entrepreneurship.
